The 9000 Guardians Have Taken Over

Here are some characteristics and a model listing of the various Style R bag HEPA filter cylinder models produced by Electrolux and Aerus; namely, the Guardians and the Lux 9000s. I created this page for three reasons:

1) There doesn't seem to be a great deal of information about this period of Electrolux and Aerus history, which would tentatively be from 1999, the date of issue of the Electrolux Guardian 75th Anniversary Model C134A, to the introduction of the 'redesigned' Aerus Lux Guardian Ultra, which I believe came out in 2009-2010. There are plenty of sources out there for information on vintage Electroluxes...not so many for newer ones. Besides that, I have, in other forums, tried (unsuccessfully) to get answers about these models, so the old idea of "If you want something done, do it yourself," applies here.

2) I really believe that these models, along with the earlier Renaissances and Epic 8000, represent a very unique period in Electrolux and Aerus history, and they are my personal favourites out of all the models. Of course, the Lux Guardian Platinum did bring back the variable speed motor, but not the deluxe hose handle and on-board-the-vacuum attachment storage.

3) Nine) different models in eleven or so years? That's a fair number of machines to characterize and keep track of...and, despite what you might find on eBay, there is no such machine as an "Aerus Electrolux Guardian 9000 Lux 8000 with warranty Renaissance Wow Epic 6500 Legacy".

Note 1: These model characteristics and differences are based on models I own and pictures and information about models seen on the internet. I can't vouch for 100% accuracy, especially because models for sale on eBay and elsewhere are not infrequently shown with mismatched hoses, power nozzles, and other attachments, and/or missing their logos and ratings stickers.

Note 2: I'm not exactly sure of the chronology and manufacturing dates of these models, although I think I do have them in the correct order, at least based on the model numbers, which would presumably run in sequence. I've heard and seen so many varying dates in my research on these models that its nearly pointless to present them here. The only dates I can be sure of are for the Electrolux Guardian 75th Anniversary model, Model C134A, which most certainly came out in 1999, and the Aerus Lux 9000, as the company name changed in 2003, and this is the first machine with the name 'Aerus' on it. However, I can at least 'hazard a guess' for the rest.

Note 3: I'm not sure when they changed the motor in these models (I believe its called the "VM3" motor?)*. My Aerus Guardians Models C154B and C154E certainly have a very different sounding (and apparently more powerful) motor than previous models. Videos I've seen of the other models, as well as the models I own, have the "classic Electrolux" sounding motor. I'm fairly sure Electrolux used to build its own motors, until some of the later models, perhaps including these two Guardians, when they contracted that work out to other companies.

*It just so happened that I dismantled my Guardian C154B today, mostly to see what these machines were like inside. It wasn't radically different from the basic Electrolux design, except for the additional wiring and circuit boards, of course. My C154B (single stage) motor looks exactly like this, except the carbon brush holders and fan surround are black:

Guardian C154B Motor

One of these days, I might bust open the C154E to see what kind of motor it has. I do know that its rated at 8.2 amps, whereas the C154B is 8 amps, so perhaps the motors are different. However, one would have to consult a motor expert to get these facts right, and I'm certainly no expert.

Note 4: Some machines have either an American flag oval sticker, specifying the places of manufacture, design, and engineering, or a "Good Housekeeping" guarantee oval sticker on the attachment compartment door. I'm not sure if this was completely random or not, but I do have examples of machines with these stickers. I'm guessing that machines sold in Canada may not have had these stickers? Who knows?

Note 5: See links for pictures of the various models, all from my own collection.

Note 6: I'm not sure why Aerus/Electrolux, in the middle of the run of their flagship "Guardian" name, put out two basically identical models called "Lux 9000". I can't see or imagine anything that makes the 9000s different from the Guardians, and one would think that "Lux 9000" would be a lower-line model, along with the Lux 5500, Lux 7000, etc, although they did have the Epic 8000 as a top of the line model, so I can't say for sure. Perhaps they were thinking of ditching the "Guardian" name around this time, but continuing with that style of machine? Who knows? The 9000s could also have been sold indirectly (i.e. not door-to-door). Its not even as if the 'Lux 9000' was used only at the end of a run of different 'Guardian' models, either...it's smack dab in the middle.

1. Electrolux Guardian, Model C134A (75th Anniversary)
  • color: white with gray trim, gray cord, small attachments, and attachment tray, white and gray Sidekick, white and grey combination floor/carpet nozzle
  • logo: white background with dark blue and white "Guardian", 75th anniversary badge
  • side bumper logo: "Electrolux" in blue raised letters on gray background
  • hose: white and gray, "Electrolux" logo
  • power nozzle: "Electrolux" in blue enclosed in blue oval, white with gray bumper
  • significant inasmuch as its the first Guardian (which became the company's flagship model), an anniversary model, and the first model to offer a HEPA filter.
  • year: 1999

2. Electrolux Guardian, Model C134B (75th Anniversary)
  • color: white with gray trim, gray cord, small attachments, and attachment tray, white and gray Sidekick, white and grey combination floor/carpet nozzle
  • logo: white background with dark blue and white "Guardian", 75th anniversary badge
  • side bumper logo: "Electrolux" in blue raised letters on gray background
  • hose: white and gray, "Electrolux" logo
  • power nozzle: "Electrolux" in blue enclosed in blue oval, white with gray bumper
  • appears to be identical to the C134A; perhaps they added an extra row of brushes to the power nozzle brush roll? Who knows?
  • year: 1999(?) - 2000(?)
3. Electrolux Guardian Encore, Model C134C
  • color: white with blue trim, black cord, white small attachments, white attachment tray, white and blue Sidekick, white and blue combination floor/carpet nozzle
  • logo: white background with dark blue and white "Guardian", "Encore" on black stripe, dark blue "E"
  • side bumper logo: white handwritten "Electrolux" in dark blue outline on silver background with three dark blue horizontal stripes on either side (these logos are frequently missing, according to the pictures I see - its obviously the first one to have the 'stick-on' decal on the side as opposed to the raised lettering)
  • hose: white and blue, "Electrolux" logo
  • power nozzle: dark blue handwritten "Electrolux", white with blue bumper
  • year: 2000(?)-2001(?)
  • first in the parade of white and pale blue models (not NECESSARILY a bad thing)

4. Electrolux Lux 9000, Model C134D
  • color: white with blue trim, black cord, white small attachments, white attachment tray, white and blue Sidekick, white and blue combination floor/carpet nozzle
  • logo: silver and dark blue background, "Lux" handwritten in dark blue, "9000" in white
  • side bumper logo: dark blue handwritten "Electrolux" on silver background, three dark blue horizontal stripes on either side (these logos are missing in even greater numbers than the Guardian Encore, according to the pictures I see, and according to my model)
  • hose: white and blue, "Electrolux" logo
  • power nozzle: dark blue handwritten "Lux", white with blue bumper
  • year: 2001(?)

5. Guardian by Electrolux, Model C134E
  • color: white with blue trim, black cord, white small attachments, white attachment tray, white and blue Sidekick, white and blue combination floor/carpet nozzle
  • logo: white background with dark blue and white "Guardian", "By Electrolux" on black stripe, dark blue "G"
  • side bumper logo: dark blue and white "Guardian" on silver background, three dark blue horizontal stripes on either side
  • hose: white and blue, "Guardian" logo
  • power nozzle: "Guardian" in dark blue and white, white with blue bumper
  • year: 2002(?) - 2003(?)
  • This "By Electrolux" business and the side bumper and power nozzle logos also matches the later model C154B. In addition, the attachment door logo is similar in style to the Guardian Encore C134C.

6. Aerus Lux 9000, Model C134F
  • color: white with blue trim, black cord, white small attachments, white attachment tray, white and blue Sidekick, white and blue combination floor/carpet nozzle
  • logo: dark blue background with "Aerus" in white and orange Aerus oval (underneath the "A")
  • side bumper logo: handwritten dark blue "Lux 9000" on silver background, three blue horizontal stripes on either side

  • power nozzle: handwritten dark blue "Lux", white with blue bumper. Also, was this the first with the green bristles on the brush roll (i.e. the 'high performance' brush roll)?
  • year: 2003(?) - 2005(?)
  • This is the first model that says "Aerus" anywhere on the machine.

7. Aerus Lux 9000, Model C154A
    • color: white with blue trim, black cord, white small attachments, white attachment tray, white and blue Sidekick, white and blue combination floor/carpet nozzle
    • logo: dark blue background with "Aerus" in white and orange Aerus oval (underneath the "A")
    • side bumper logo: handwritten dark blue "Lux 9000" on silver background, three blue horizontal stripes on either side
    • hose: white and blue, no logo
    • power nozzle: handwritten dark blue "Lux", white with blue bumper
    • year: 2003(?) - 2005(?)
    • This model normally only turns up in Google searches; I've only once, to my knowledge, seen a picture of an Aerus Lux 9000 with that model number. Perhaps the different model numbers indicate a different motor? This supposition would fit with the model numbering sequence...i.e. the 154B and 154E also have an updated motor. The machine is otherwise cosmetically identical to the C134F

    1. Hello Bob-

I just purchased an Electrolux Guardian 8000 from 1999. Is there any difference in performance from this model C134A and the Guardian 9000 C134F?

I have the opportunity to switch it out and I'm curious

      Thanks!

      1. Hi Rich. I don't notice any difference between the 134A and 134F. One is as effective as the other in terms of performance.

      2. P..S. If you have a chance, let me know what happens when you do switch them.

        Thanks,
        Bob

    2. Bob-

After calling two separate Aerus outlets, I can confirm that your statements are correct. That being said , I am going to keep my C134A (being that its an Electrolux anniversary edition, plus the hassle of shipping it back).

      Thanks for responding so quickly!

    4. Thanks; I try my best. That thread is the very reason I created this page...i.e. the Style Rs are my favorite machines, and I want to compile as much information about them as I can, not to mention collect all of them eventually.

    5. Hi Bob, I am thinking of buying a c134d model off craigslist. Looks very clean and well-kept. I will be able to see it in person before buying. Can you tell me about what year this model was made? Catherine

    6. Also Bob, she is asking $350 for it. Is that a reasonable price if it is in great condition?

      1. Hi Catherine. The Lux 9000 C134D model came out in either 2001 or 2002, making it around 15-16 years old. For an Electrolux, that's not very old, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I would make sure it has all the attachments you can see in the fourth picture here: http://eluxurious.blogspot.ca/2017/08/no-decals-just-grab-marker.html. Also, make sure that the power nozzle and Sidekick work properly, the vacuum motor sounds fine, with no funny noises, and, especially for these models, make sure all the controls on the hose handle work properly...i.e. make sure the switches turn the vacuum and power nozzle on and off, and make sure the three (low, medium, and high) speeds work properly. Also, make sure you can connect the hose to the blower (take off the box HEPA filter on top), and make sure the hose can turn on the machine in this position. Make sure the hose is in good shape, with no rips, bends, or tears, the cord retracts smoothly, the latches on the wands and attachments are in working order, and the front cover latch, attachment door latch, and wheels are all in good shape.

I'm not so sure I'd pay $350 for a vacuum, but I also don't think its a completely unreasonable price if the unit is in great shape. By the way, Aerus/Electrolux still makes parts, bags, and filters for these machines, and these are all also available on eBay, which is where I buy all of my vacuum parts and supplies. The C134D takes Style R bags, and the box style HEPA filter. If you like, I can recommend some eBay stores and/or sellers with reasonable prices.

I myself love these machines...they have tons of power, are very easy to use with the onboard attachments and hose handle controls, and should give good service. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

        Bob

      2. Hi Bob, I would appreciate any recommendations for some ebay stores and/ or sellers for my vacuum replacement. As a 65 yr old, I am not super ebay savvy, and have been duped a few times. My Renaissance that I purchased in 1994 has officially died and I am pretty sure that I would like to stay with the R series, most likely the Guardian models C154B or E according to the research I did on your page. I purchased a LUX Legacy in 2012 and have never liked it. To me, it just doesn't compare to my old Renni. Call me crazy, but I like the longer cord, variable speed and the weightiness of the model. It certainly was a game changer in style compared to my Grand Marquis at that time.

        Thanks for your help

      3. Hi Dawn. There is an eBay store called ‘great-vacs’ that I bought a couple of machines from. They’re based in the US, and only ship to there (not sure where you’re based). I didn’t have any negative experiences with them, although I haven’t bought something from them in a long time. I see that they are still going strong, though. I can’t think of any other recommendations for machines…I’ve bought from individual sellers and ‘went with my gut’, and luckily, have yet to be disappointed. I’m sure you know this yourself, but I’d only buy from a seller with good, high resolution pictures of every possible angle of the machine and all the attachments…otherwise, no go.

I buy all my Style R HEPA filters in bulk from a store on eBay and Amazon called ‘LifeSupplyUSA’ that ships everywhere, although I see it has suspended business due to the coronavirus. I think they’ll sell bags to you if you ask, although I don’t think bags are listed on their store. I’ve also bought bags from an eBay store called ‘AmericanVacuumSupply’ with no complaints.

I agree with all your comments on the Style R models…everything about them is deluxe, and they have withstood the test of time fairly well (not as well as the older Electroluxes, maybe, but still…). For good, hard, regular cleaning, I wouldn’t use anything else. Any of the Guardians and/or Lux 9000s would be a good buy, although the C154B and C154E are the latest models of the batch, and thus will (probably) be in a little bit better condition. The C154E is a little quieter in operation, as well.

Hope this helps, and best of luck in finding something new,

        Bob

    7. I am looking for a hose for an Aurus Guardian model C154E. My local retail seller said it is out of stock. He's trying to sell me a new vacuum when I am satisfied with the old one.

I'm assuming the two comments three seconds apart are both yours.

Not sure what store you're visiting, but hoses for the Electrolux/Aerus Guardian shouldn't be out of stock. Even the oldest Electrolux Guardian is still under warranty, so you'd think that Aerus is obligated to make and supply hoses for the Guardian. Assuming you're talking about a generic vac shop, have you also tried an Aerus depot, if there's one near you?

If all else local fails, these hoses are available on eBay and Amazon...not cheap, but at least they're available.

    8. I am looking for a hose for an Aurus Guardian model C154E. The machine is about 27 years old and has needed no maintenance. The local retailer says there are no parts made for this model.
